Police have detained a woman believed to have been the girlfriend of late Afrigo Band legend Moses Matovu as investigations continue into his death following an early-morning confrontation in Kibuli, Kampala.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said the woman was in Matovu’s company shortly before the incident and is being held to assist detectives in establishing what happened.
According to Kawala, preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu arrived at the woman’s residence in Kibuli at about 5:30am on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Police say that as Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence, they were allegedly confronted by another man who is believed to have previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
The confrontation reportedly turned physical, leaving Matovu with serious injuries. He was subsequently rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later died.
“The deceased sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later succumbed to his injuries,” Kawala said in a statement.
Male Suspect Flees Scene
Police say the male suspect fled after the confrontation and has not yet been arrested.
Kawala said investigators have identified the suspect and are pursuing him to facilitate his arrest and establish the circumstances that led to Matovu’s death.
Meanwhile, the woman who was with Matovu has remained in police custody as detectives continue questioning her.
Police have cautioned against drawing conclusions from the different accounts circulating about the incident, saying investigations are still underway to establish what exactly transpired.
“However, the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and subsequent death are yet to be fully established,” Kawala said.
Earlier reports had linked Matovu’s death to an alleged dispute involving the woman and another man. Police have now confirmed that a confrontation involving a man allegedly connected to the woman is part of the preliminary investigation, but say the full circumstances have not yet been established.
