Veteran Ugandan musician Moses Matovu, one of the founding members of the legendary Afrigo Band, has passed on at the age of 77 following an attack in Kampala.
Matovu was attacked early Thursday morning in the Kibuli Market Zone B area of Makindye Division and was later taken to Kibuli Hospital for treatment, where he passed on.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the incident, saying the musician had been targeted by unidentified individuals.
According to preliminary information, Matovu was attacked shortly after 5am while heading to a mosque for morning prayers.
Police have not yet established the motive behind the attack or identified those responsible.
Kawala said a police task team had been dispatched to the area to establish what happened, while investigations were ongoing to trace and apprehend the suspects.
By around 8am, Matovu’s body remained at the hospital mortuary as relatives, friends and colleagues started arriving as arrangements were made to take his body home.
Matovu leaves behind a major legacy in Uganda’s music industry. He was among the musicians who founded Afrigo Band in Kampala on August 31, 1975, alongside Tony Ssenkebejje, Jef Sewava, Charles Ssekyanzi and Jessy Gitta.
Over the years, Afrigo Band became one of Uganda’s most enduring live music groups, with Matovu contributing to its growth and influence for decades.
His passing brings to an end a remarkable chapter in the history of one of Uganda’s most celebrated bands.
