Veteran Ugandan rapper GNL Zamba has taken a swipe at fellow artist Gravity Omutujju, referring to him as an “empty tin” and a “noise maker” during a recent media appearance following the Yenze Hip Hop Festival.
The festival, which aimed to celebrate Ugandan hip hop talent, experienced a low turnout—a matter that sparked questions about the absence of prominent names such as Gravity Omutujju, who is often labeled a hip hop artist himself.
When asked why Gravity didn’t grace the stage, GNL responded with a mix of diplomacy and subtle jabs. “The organizers contacted nearly every artist, but maybe some weren’t within budget or others weren’t clear,” he said. “And also, some feared I might shadow them.”
He then added a pointed remark without directly naming Gravity at first: “I don’t want to speak about people’s names, but that one is a noise maker.”
GNL later doubled down, bluntly referring to Gravity as an “empty tin,” a common Ugandan phrase used to describe someone loud but lacking substance.
The comments add fuel to the long-standing tension between Uganda’s mainstream artists and those considered purists within the hip hop community.
While Gravity has repeatedly declared himself a key figure in Ugandan hip hop, critics like GNL argue that his work lacks lyrical depth and authentic representation of the genre.
